June 2, 2001 TRIP TO ST LOUIS

LEFT MILWAUKIE 6:32 A.M. 6/2/01.
It was raining but the weather got better further east.

Camped at Century RV Park in Ogden, Utah. Only $19.90 because we were Senior Citizens (Actually she just asked Byran if he was). It rained a little on us during the night.

June 3, 2001 – Drove from Ogden to Denver, Colorado. We followed our Yahoo map to the letter. We wanted to see Valli, a friend from Cycle Montana and Cycle Utah, on Downing Street. We didn’t have the direction so the computer took us to East Downing Street – Not too great a part of town, but they were friendly. Finally called Valli and she said we needed to be on South Downing Street. So, we took off – just barely missed her. She had to go back to work at the hospital across the street after lunch. She had to work until 9:30, so we went out to dinner with Gary, her son. He was very nice to show us around and keep us from getting lost. We then visited Don and Gloria, two more lovely people from Cycle Montana and Cycle Utah.

Monday, June 4th – Valli drove us to the History Museum in Denver. It was a very interesting place. We also saw the capital and other government buildings, where the zoo was, etc. We only had ½ day here but could easily have spent more time. I bought a book on “Baby Doe Tabor”, the Silver Queen of Colorado that we read to each other while driving. It was very interesting and amusing.

We stopped at the Tower Museum just before crossing into Kansas. Actually it looks like a lighthouse in the middle of farm country. It is worth seeing; you can see six states, or so they say. The place is full of old things, some so old not even I knew what they were.

We drove to Colby, Kansas from Denver. Here we camped for the night. $12.00. Can’t beat that.

We drove across Kansas from Colby, then across Missouri, and finally arrived at St. Louis (or Kirkwood, a suburb of St. Louis).

The street was narrow and, of course, we drove past the house. Zida spotted us and ran after us. Matt had to work this day and attend a math class that night. So, we drove around and ate dinner, then stopped at an 18-hole miniature golf course. We played a game and also Zida and Byran batted AT some balls at the batting cages there. I just let the mosquitoes enjoy their meal.

First Day in St. Louis:
1 Went to the Missouri Botanical Gardens and saw Henry Shaw’s
House as well as the beautiful gardens surrounding it.
2 Next we went to the Jefferson National Expanion Memorial National Park, which included the Arch. We entered the park at street level and went down under the street. Here they have a wonderful museum, gift stores, etc. Then we went up into the Arch by way of a little “car” which held 5 people. It took 4 minutes to get to the top, then you could get out and walk across and look out little windows at the view. Going back took only 3 minutes.
3 Another part of the National Park was the Old Courthouse. It was most interesting, also with a museum and tour. It is famous for the trying of the Dred Scott case during the Civil War.
4 Matt met us for a tour of the Anheiser Busch Brewery. We had
Three samples.
5 Went home and back to the cages to bat balls. Matt wanted to
Kill those baseballs. I think he did hit some. I wanted to get a lot of people to stand back and say you are missing them but Zida didn’t think that was a good idea. Matt might have got really mad and we all would have to run. Those balls are hard to hit if you haven’t done it in a while. I only did it one time before.

Second Day:
1. We took the train to downtown St Louis.
2. Went through the National Bowling and Baseball (Cardinals) Hall
Of Fame.
3. Zida and Byran went through the Busch Stadium.
4. Rode the train to (here I can’t remember the name, but it was like Grand Central Station turned into a mall.) Anyway we had fun looking around and had our images characterized. Then back to the Park where we boarded the trin, ate a Pizza, and watched about ½ of Romeo & Juliet, a Shakespearean play in the park. Mosquitoes ate well.

Third Day and Fourth Day:
1. Matt and Zida took us to an old Lead Mine. You couldn’t go down into it, but there was a museum and willing people there to tell you about it. Drove on from there to the Shut-Ins, a great swimming hole. You float down the river through a series of rock falls. A few of the pools you fall into want to keep you, but spit you out and you are on your way.
2. We drove on and stopped at the Current River.
3. Saw some very nice country on the way. Missouri was a lot greener than I expected it to be.

4. We camp at the Current River where we would be canoeing the next day.
5. Next day we rented a canoe (Zida and Matt had one) and floated down the Current River. It was a tame river, especially for Mom.
6. We saw 10-12 minks, Blue Heron, turtles, and fish that were unfamiliar to us.
7. Took all day, ended with a nice dinner – drove back to St Louis.

Fifth Day:
1. Went to Zida & Matt’s church
2. Had coffee
3. Went to Grant’s Farm, saw the elephant and petted the goats. Byran kissed a camel, then
4. Had beer (3 samples this time)
5. This is where the Clydesdale Horses are kept. Except for the hay on the floor, and no curtains, you could call the stables a very nice house.

June 11th
1. Had to say good-bye to Matt & Zida. Left St Louis
2. Drove back across Missouri and Kansas
3. Stopped at the Agricultural Hall of Fame in Kansas. Didn’t think this would be very interesting, but it was.
4. Camped again at Colby, Kansas

June 12th
1. Drove from Colby, Kansas to Pitkin, CO.
2. Stopped at Florence, Colorado just outside of Canon City.
3. Visited with Rene and Megan – had lunch with them.
4. Arrived Pitkin late afternoon. Beautiful weather.
5. Jim took us out to see the moose. Saw a young 2 year-old. We stared at each other quite while before it left. They sure have long legs. They look awkward but can really move well.

June 13th
1. Byran and Jim went Fishing
2. Joanne and I went to town and did girl things.
3. Got home around 2 p.m. but no guys
4. Started snowing – Total snow was about 3 or 4 inches, but roads weren’t bad. It looked like Christmas.
5. Guys came home around 6 p.m., frozen, but with fish. Byran only had on sweat pants, a long sleeved shirt, and a fleece jacket. He did have a ski band over his ears.
June 14th
1. Snow still around but beautiful out.
2. Took in some local 2nd hand stores – always fun to find bargains
3. Went on sight seeing trip
4. Started at Crested Butte.
a. Great little tourist town and ski area

5. Saw the head of a world record Elk, shot back in 1899; recognition didn’t come until March, 1961.
