July 10, 2003 - Fishing Trip

You can’t call it a vacation because retired people don’t get vacations. It is the sad part of being retired. When will we get back? I don’t know and don’t care. The truth is it is good to come home. The mail is a foot high and the answering machine is blinking very fast; not much email - 13 and only 2 that are not trying to get something from me.

Well back to the trip. I put a freezer in the van and hooked a phase inverter up to the battery. It did a good job.

Off to Hells Canyon to “fish.” They know what they are talking about when they call it fishing. There is nothing that says you are going to catch a fish. Now you know why they don’t call it “Catching.” After two days I did catch a Carp. Yes, the Canyon’s name is the right name - 110 Degrees most of the day. You would just cook in the boat and the freezer would not freeze; the side of it was Hot.

On our way to Denver we stopped in Ogden, Utah and it was still hot. I told Ilene that I would try to find a fan. There was an all night Wal-Mart about a mile away. It was about 10:00 p.m. I walked to it and bought a fan and a plug. Ilene thought I got lost because it took me so long. We did get a good night’s sleep!

Valli lives in Denver and she took us to Pikes Peak. She made a wrong turn and ended up going the long way. I am training her to not look at maps. The view from the Mountain was great. There were no clouds and it was clear. After Pikes Peak we went to the casino town of Cripple Creek. I lost my $100 in a hurry but Ilene held on to hers for a long time. Valli won. The next day a bike ride and off to Blackhawk. It was the same story, different day. Ilene lost $120.00. We dropped about $450.00 altogether. Now Valli won $1,000.00 and then played the machine next to it and won $150.00 more while she was waiting for her money. Bless her little heart. (I am not a sore looser.)

It was fun to Visit Valli. I always have great time.
We stopped to see Jim’s Daughter, Renee, and his son Mike dropped by. It was fun to talk to them and see how their lives are doing. They both have a lot of things going on in their lives right now; just things to keep them from being bored. We left there to see Jim my old army buddy. Some of the things we use to do, and they say the kids today are wild!

Jim and Joanne were busy working on their Lodge. We stayed and ate dinner (oysters that I had been trying to keep frozen in 110 degree weather) and played Race Horse Pinochle with decks I bought at the Wild Horse Casino for $.25. They put a hole in them and I know all the luck ran out. I have only played with one other deck that was as bad. You could not get a run or melt 300. There was only one thing to do with the deck. Yes, I tore it up in little pieces.

Off to Blue Mesa to catch Coho Salmon. We fished five days and caught 13 Salmon up to 18 inches long. I used my 2-horse motor. It would use a pint of gas a day. The van used more going to the campsite. Gas was $2.00 a gallon and I had to break down and buy a dollars worth. The camping sites were $10.00 a night, no showers. Think about it - over a 100 for five days. I don’t know why no one wanted to talk to me. We went back to Jim’s to get a shower and try to play Pinochle again. It was not the cards. It must have been that the Casinos got all my luck. It is a good thing I had bad luck playing cards and gambling or I wouldn’t have had any luck at all.

We stopped in Gunnison and went through the Museum. There was a lot to see but what took the longest time was that the museum volunteer taking the money was a Machinist. Ilene almost fell asleep while we talked shop. There was a train engine built to scale there. It was about 8 inches tall and 3 feet long. It took 5,000 hours to build and it worked.

We stopped at Black Canyon (the newest National Park). It is a stop you should make. It is 2,000 feet deep and worth all the little walks out to the edge. There is a lot of awesome scenery and history there.

Well, one Ice cream at the local store and we are on our way home.
